Ratan Vilas, Jodhpur, India

Jodhpur is an overnight train ride from Delhi, so if you happen to be in Delhi for the half marathon, it’s worth taking a few days out to visit this very interesting city. Before we go into details, here’s a short film that I made on arriving at the hotel. It’s not meant to be a glossy film showing the accomodation at it’s best, just an honest first impression on what the average visitor might encounter on arrival. Location - A 5 to 10 minute tuk tuk taxi ride from Jodhpur…

Clouds End Villa, Dharamshala, India

Before we go into details, here’s a short film that I made on arriving at the hotel. It’s not meant to be a glossy film showing the accommodation at it’s best, just an honest first impression on what the average visitor might encounter on arrival. Location - Clouds End villa is a 15 minute walk out of Dharamshala town, although it’s best to take a tuk tuk when you first arrive as the way is uphill and not signposted until you get out of town. Alternatively, you can walk down from…

Hotel Great Ganga, Rishikesh, India

Before we go into details, here’s a short film that I made on arriving at the hotel. It’s not meant to be a glossy film showing the accommodation at it’s best, just an honest first impression on what the average visitor might encounter on arrival. Location - A 5 minute shared taxi ride from Rishikesh bus station, and a 10 minute walk from the backpacker and yoga student suburb of Ramjhulla. Set up a steep path away from the road, it escapes much of the traffic noise which plagues many an…

Hotels Vivek and Rak International, Delhi, India

These two hotels are listed in the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet guidebooks as the best of the backpacker hotels in Delhi, so I checked them both out to discover which was best. Location - Both hotels are in Pahar Ganj district, an easy 10 minute walk from New Delhi Railway Station. The Vivek is on the main bazaar, and Rak International is just off it, which means it is the quieter of the two. You can get a tuk tuk to either of them, and both advertise an airport pick…

Review of Shri Mahant Guesthouse, Orchha, India

Location - The guesthouse is on the 100 metre long pedestrianised road that leads from where the buses drop you off to the central market, so couldn’t be more central, with the cathedral ruin, major palaces and restuarants all within 5 minutes walk of your room. The river is about 10 minutes walk. It gets a noisy with holy men calling on loudspeakers if you are there during festival time, which is pretty likely as there are loads of festivals in India. The guesthouse is the building in the photo with…

Hotel Broadway, Mussourie, India

Location - On Camel’s Back Road, a 5 minute walk off The Mall. Not at all easy to find, but if you are coming from the Kulri Bus Stand take a right when you get to the ‘Green’ restuarant. It’s great when you know where it is though, very near to the centre but reasonably quiet. Check In - The Hotel looked really nice from the outside but it was a bit gloomy inside. The reception guy was grim-faced, and purely functional. I don’t think he or his mate smiled at me…

Hotel Dreamland, Shimla, India

Before we go into details, here’s a short film that I made on arriving at the hotel. It’s not meant to be a glossy film showing the accommodation at it’s best, just an honest first impression on what the average visitor might encounter on arrival. Location - A five to ten minute walk up from The Ridge and Christ Church the Hotel Dreamland, which is listed in the Rough Guide as the best budget option in Shimla, has fantastic views over the town and surrounding mountains. It took me about thirty-five…

Yogi Lodge, Varanasi, India

Varansai is an overnight train ride from Delhi, so if you happen to be in Delhi for the half marathon, it’s worth taking a few days out to visit this very interesting city. Location - The Yogi Lodge is in the heart of the old town in Varanasi and I’d say it is pretty much impossible to find for a first time visitor. You can’t ask the way from locals, as you’re likely to be directed to a sound-a-like hotel which pays them more commission. When I arrived by train from…

Kailash Hotel, Hardiwar, India

Hardiwar is a 6 hour train ride from Delhi, so if you happen to be in Delhi for the half marathon, it’s worth taking a few days out to visit this very interesting town and the mountains just north of it. Location - Very near the bus and train station, about a 5 minute walk from either. On the main road though, so a bit noisy. Check In - The staff were friendly enough. There was no bargaining though. “It cost 400r a night, no bargaining possible”, the owner said with a…

The Tourist Rest House, Agra, India

Location - The Rest House is not really central, but then nothing is in Agra, it’s a spread out mess of a city. But tuk tuks are cheap here so you can get around easily, and the Taj Mahal is only a 10 minute ride away. The Rest House provides a free pick up service from the train station if you email or phone in advance. Check In - The staff answered our emails promptly and assured us that our room was reserved for us. When we arrived, the staff were ok,…
