FREEtto Restaurant & Take Away, Rome

FREEtto is a take away/dine in restaurant focused on Italian fine fried food. At the moment they have two restaurants, the first in the city center near to via Veneto, which is the one we visited, and the second (bigger) one near the Collie Albani metro station, and more are due to open soon. We’d heard that they do excellent food, using organic ingredients, with plenty of options for vegetarians and those with other preferences and since they were easy to get to on foot (many vegetarian places in Rome are a…

Aroma Restaurant at Palazzo Manfredi, Rome

Aroma Restaurant is our favourite evening-time eatery in Rome. It’s not easy to say that either considering how many good places to eat in Rome there are and also, that there are very few vegetarian options on the Aroma menu (and I do try my hardest to be vegetarian). The service and location were beyond excellent, however, as was the food and wine where content most definitely matched style; the presentation was great and the quality lived up to it. A few more vegetarian options and a nod towards vegan and gluten/lactose free…

Hotel Lancelot, Rome

The Hotel Lancelot was one of the highlights of our stay in Rome. It’s a beautifully appointed hotel with a timeless feel in a wonderful location (very near the Colosseum) and run by the sort of charming, experienced and knowledgeable owners that you have to search seriously hard for nowadays. Here are a few photos and observations that we made during our stay, and at the bottom of this review is a video that’ll give you a further idea of the hotel. Location – We took about twenty minutes to walk…

The Hera Hotel, Athens

We stayed at The Hera Hotel in Athens for 7 nights during November, 2014. Here are a few photos and observations that we made during our stay, and at the bottom of this review is a video that’ll give you a further idea of the hotel. The Hera is a friendly, central, four star place and relatively good value in our opinion considering what you get for the price and the cost of other hotels in the vicinity. Location - The Hera Hotel is at Falirou 9, a quiet residential street less than…

Oinopoleio Cook House, Athens

We’d heard of Oinopoleio through our Greek contacts; they’d described it as a traditional wine shop and restaurant where you could get simple, high quality food and wine from the owner’s own vineyard and listen to good music at the same time. “And,” remarked a good Greek friend, “even though it’s just ten minutes walk from the Plaka, you’re likely to be the only tourist in there.” This thought appealed to us so we looked on the Oinopoleio website and discovered that they have different music on different nights of the…

Bock Beer Restaurant, Athens

The Bock Beer Restaurant is less than ten minutes walk from the southern Plaka area of central Athens but it seems much further than that in atmosphere. There’s nothing typical about this place – within the drinks or food menu or the decor or the service – and no sideshow on offer either (like smashing of plates or overly flamboyant waiters pulling in people from the streets as potential customers). It’s very much it’s own entity, a 100% contemporary Greek offering in an area that rarely deviates from the norm that most tourists…

Beer Time, Athens

Beer Time is a bar and restaurant situated right on Iroon Square in Psiri, one of our favourite Athenian districts. It’s a lively square and although it’s just a five minute walk from Plaka’s Monastiriki Square (tourist central) it’s mostly locals who come here of an evening. If you’re looking to learn about (and taste) the world of Greek microbrewing, then without a doubt Beer Time is THE place to come in Athens. Thanasis, the owner of the pub, worked in Germany for over twenty years in the communications industry and gained a passion…

Mystic Pizza on Veikou Street, Athens

We were looking for some decent pasta and pizza to give us energy for the forthcoming Athens marathon, and also because we felt in need of something different to the usual Greek fare and wanted to stick to our preferred vegetarian diet. We heard about Mystic Pizza from Trip Advisor and since one of their three branches in Athens was very near to our hotel (The Art Gallery Hotel) we paid it a visit. This branch is on a pretty pedestrianized road just off Veikou Street, which is an arty…

Casa Coppelle Restaurant, Rome

We arrived early evening at Casa Coppelle, having had a photo stop at the Pantheon (which is perhaps Rome’s most complete ancient ruin). The staff greeted us warmly and offered us a choice of seating inside or out. We peeked inside, it looked beautiful… …but the restaurant isn’t on a main road so there wasn’t much traffic passing (I think just three or four vehicles passed us in the two hours were were seated there) and the moon was shining down from a clear sky; in such circumstances it seemed criminal…

Restaurant Rooftop Hotel Forum, Rome

The Hotel Forum is an impressive 4 star hotel with an amazing location and view over Via dei Fori Imperiali, the thoroughfare that leads from the Colosseum past the Ancient Roman Forum to Piazza Venezia and the Vittoriano, the symbolic heart of the modern city. The interior of the hotel, where we relaxed for a while (it’d been a half hour walk from our hotel so we wanted to collect ourselves before what we knew was going to be a special dining experience) before taking the lift up to the restaurant on…
